After nearly 20 years working in Kentfield, Nicole Cruz considers Marin County her home. But the lack of affordable housing here means she must commute every day from her house in the East Bay. Time on the road is time she isn’t spending connecting with her community and her family. But the long-time county employee has found a way to make her commute count.

Immigrants are a significant part of Marin County, as a percentage of our population and in contribution to our economy and culture. To ensure a complete and vibrant recovery from the pandemic, we must thoughtfully include immigrants in our policies, practices and decision-making.

Community Voices: John Lam

John’s parents were refugees from Vietnam. He grew up in the Canal District in San Rafael and credits Community Action Marin’s Children and Family Services program with providing him and his family opportunities that helped enrich their lives. Today, he is a principal dancer at Boston Ballet.

Community Voices: Kelli’s Story

Kelli was homeless. Divorce happened, the market crashed, and she lost everything. As she puts it, Community Action Marin saved her life. Her Case Manager at Community Action Marin was there to help with all of her basic needs, a true example of being in your corner.

Maria is a mother of three children getting comprehensive services from Head Start to cash assistance and food. Maria’s story is an example of why we do this work. Being there for families when they need us the most.

Marin resident, Alia Brown, has a personal story about moving out of crisis. The death of her mother started her on a journey that included being homeless. She came to Community Action Marin for help, and together we were able to set a path to recovery.

Friday, May 17, 2024 was an evening of connection and impact when Marin residents, advocates, elected officials, staff, and volunteers gathered. The event focused on our shared vision of equity for all, celebrated the achievements of those we serve, and provided a space to help advance our mission of well-being for all who call Marin home.
