Growing Up with Head Start

Twenty-four years ago, I was a preschooler in a Head Start classroom in Marin. I still have fond memories of my classmates, teachers, and all the fun activities we did together, like making our own playdough and even going to the zoo. The friendships I made in the program have been lifelong connections, and we still keep in touch.
I was born and raised in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood. My parents are from Guatemala and immigrated here more than 30 years ago in search of better opportunities. My mother remembers how helpful Head Start was in connecting her with information, resources, and support that helped our family navigate life in a new country. I believe that guidance helped shape the importance our family placed on reading and education.
I was the first person in my family to graduate from a university. I studied at UC Santa Cruz, earned a BA in psychology, and eventually moved back to Marin. Shortly after, I began working with Community Action Marin in the same Head Start program I attended as a child. It is incredibly meaningful to return to the same program as someone providing the support I once received.
Today, Head Start is facing threats that would restrict access and reduce services, and that is deeply concerning to me. This is an essential program that helps families and makes a difference. Low-cost or free early education is a huge help for families struggling with rising rents, food costs, and everyday expenses.
I don’t know where I would be today without Head Start, but I do know it was an important part of my childhood. I hope we recognize what is at stake and protect this program for the children and families who depend on it.
