As a preschool teacher, a mother and a student at College of Marin, I am writing in support of Measure P, the proposed tax in support of childcare on Marin’s November ballot. I am continuing my education to become a lead teacher, with the long-term goal of teaching transitional kindergarten or kindergarten.

My journey began when I enrolled my son in Community Action Marin’s childcare program in Novato when he was about six months old. When the opportunity to join CAM’s apprenticeship program came along, I knew I had to take the chance. The apprenticeship has allowed me to work in the field while continuing my college education and receiving support along the way.

Having access to affordable, high-quality childcare has been a huge part of making this possible. Knowing my son was nearby, safe, loved and receiving high-quality care gave me peace of mind to focus on work, attend classes, complete assignments and fully participate in the apprenticeship. It has allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher while continuing to be there for my son.

The impact on my son has been just as meaningful. At nine months, he was learning to walk, talk, eat independently and brush his teeth. Now, as he prepares to finish preschool, he is becoming more independent, curious and confident. He is learning to identify and regulate his emotions and has developed a love of reading.

Coming from a single mother of four, I know how difficult it can be to pursue your dreams without support. Today, I see a brighter and more stable future for my family. Affordable, high-quality child care has made that future possible not only by supporting my education and career, but also by giving my son a strong foundation to learn and thrive.
