Community Action Marin is proud to launch our new Art & Social Justice Project with the powerful exhibit: “I Will Not Be Forgotten: The Dignity in Homelessness.”
The exhibit features selected photographs by San Rafael photographer Lea Del Pomo chronicling the life of being homeless in Marin County, the places called home, and the outreach efforts to those on the streets by local agencies like Community Action Marin. The exhibit presents an intimate and moving portrayal of life on the streets and the journeys of individuals experiencing homelessness with the goal of dissolving barriers and revealing our shared humanity.
By spotlighting the dignity, struggles, and triumphs of those living without shelter, the exhibit seeks to challenge the myth that people choose homelessness. Instead, it highlights the critical impact of human connection and the strides made when communities come together to support one another.
Del Pomo explains: “When a person feels perpetually unseen, we can harden into our solitude and internalize other’s opinions of ourselves. I’m interested in the human condition and see the beauty and tragedy in all of us. Who is behind the skin; how do they survive in the moment? My goal is to find the core within us that represents our universal connection in humanity. Using the camera is my way to capture the heart-felt sense of another.”
Not only a photographer, Del Pomo served as an Employment Development Counselor with the County of Marin at the Marin Employment Connection (MEC) for more than 20 years, and has first-hand experience of working with people in crisis and supporting them on their employment journey.
“I am very familiar with Community Action Marin and when I worked for the County I assisted CAM clients with employment plans. CAM is a critical part of our community with all its outreach and multi-services for equity and inclusion. I couldn’t think of a better place to continue the exhibit.”
Selected personal stories in the words of those depicted, accompanied by a pair of their shoes, serve as powerful symbols of the steps taken through their journeys.
