Food is more than nourishment—it’s a source of connection, comfort, and belonging. It’s at the heart of every family.
When everyone has access to fresh, healthy food, it nourishes bodies, and it builds a healthier, more resilient community.
Yet nearly 70% of parents in our early childhood education program worry about having enough food for their families.
Together, we can make access to fresh, nutrient-dense food possible for everyone.
When Community Action Marin launched Appetite for Change last spring, the team couldn’t have imagined the impact of this six-week bilingual, intergenerational initiative.
“It was a great opportunity. I learned about gardening, reusing seeds, and preserving food,” Roxana Echeverria, a San Rafael resident, shared. “I also learned how to store fruits and vegetables and make them last. Most of all, I loved having my son working on the Production Farm with me and learning about foods from around the world.”
Each week, dozens of individuals and families planted seeds, harvested crops, and developed the skills to grow and preserve food. By the end of the program, participants had harvested over 200 pounds of fresh produce from 70 different crops. They didn’t just grow food—they cultivated knowledge and a stronger community.
“Now I can grow my own food, and I’m working to build an indoor garden,” shared Roxana. “I want everyone to learn what I did and be able to make their food supply last.”
