“We know a number of households experienced financial setbacks during the last two years and may have fallen behind on their bills. We’re pleased to say that we’ll now be able to assist those who are behind on their water bills” says Laurel Hill, Community Action Marin Safety Net Director.

We’re excited to announce that Community Action Marin can now help you to receive assistance with your water bill through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The program, which is just kicking off and extends through August 31, 2023, provides help with both water and wastewater charges and is a one-time benefit.

Eligibility and assistance level is based on household size, gross monthly income, and program priorities and you can qualify it you:

  • Have a past due amount on your water or wastewater bill
  • Receive service from a community water system or wastewater treatment provider (private wells and septic excluded), and
  • Use water or wastewater system that opted into the program.

The maximum benefit amount is $2,000 and payments are sent directly to your water provider and will appear as a credit on your bill. The amount that you’ receive is based on your past due amount, current charges, fees and taxes, and other charges that appear on your bill. For customers with utilities included in rent, the benefit amount is based on the amount indicated in the Landlord Agreement. You need all of the following material to apply:

  1. A completed LIHWAP CSD41 application
  2. Proof of Government Identification
  3. Proof of Income
  4. Past Due Utility Bill and/or Final Water Termination Notice

See specific income qualifications here on our website, as well as what documents will be accepted for government issued identification and proof of income.

After you’ve submitted your application, you’ll be notified within 30 days if you’ve been approved and the amount of your assistance.

If you have more questions or want to request an application, we’re happy to assist you. Simply send an email to LIHWAP@camarin.org or call our intake specialist now at 415,526.7550.

As always, Community Action Marin is in your corner.
