Meet our Keynote Speaker: Michael D. Tubbs!

A visionary leader and changemaker, Tubbs made history in 2016 when he was elected Mayor of Stockton at just 26 years old—becoming the city’s first African-American mayor and the youngest mayor of a major U.S. city.  

His leadership transformed Stockton, launching the first mayor-led guaranteed income pilot in the nation and securing over $20 million for the Stockton Scholars program, which provides scholarships and mentorship to local students. Under his leadership, Stockton was named an All-America City twice, saw a 40% drop in homicides, and was recognized as one of the most fiscally healthy cities in the U.S. 

Tubbs is the founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) and End Poverty in California (EPIC)—organizations driving innovative policies to create economic security and equity.  

His profound impact has earned him national recognition, including being named a Harvard Institute of Politics and MIT Media Lab Fellow, a Fortune 40 Under 40 leader, and a Forbes 30 Under 30 All-Star Alumni. He has received the JFK Library’s New Frontier Award and the Civic Leadership Award from The King Center. His groundbreaking work was featured in the HBO documentary, Stockton on My Mind. 

In his memoir, The Deeper the Roots: A Memoir of Hope and Home, Tubbs shares his powerful story of rising from poverty to public service, offering a bold vision for a more just and inclusive future.
