At Step Up Marin! each year, Community Action Marin presents its Community Courage Award to a community member whose life, commitment, and actions reflect values of relationship, unity, service, and inclusivity.
This year’s Community Courage Award recipient is Monica Umaña—an inspiring leader who has made incredible strides for herself and her daughter.
Monica joined Community Action Marin’s Road to Self-Sufficiency program during one of the most difficult times in her life. Displaced from her home and living in her car with her 6-year-old daughter, her immediate priority was to find stable employment and a safe place to live.
Through the program, Monica found connection and support among fellow participants, helping her begin to heal and rebuild trust. As she explored training and job opportunities, she gradually became more open to working closely with CAM and other local partners.
With determination and perseverance, Monica secured a job and obtained housing! To build a stronger future for herself and her daughter, she completed Community Action Marin’s Peer Support Specialist Training and later enrolled in the medical administration program at College of Marin.
An avid artist, Monica uses creative expression as a path to healing and connection. She and her daughter co-create artwork to reflect and process their shared journey. A passionate advocate, she now shares her story with others in need and connects them to Community Action Marin.
Monica’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and the power of community.
