Affordable Housing for a Greener Future

Posted on Category Advocacy, General

Marin County is defined by its natural beauty and known for its historic dedication to protecting the environment. It is also known for limiting housing development.

The wide availability of open space is beloved, yet the low-density housing choices that havepredominated in Marin—like single-family homes with a median price nearing $2M—are harming both the planet and our collective quality of life.

The lack of affordable housing in Marin has caused a good portion of our workforce to live elsewhere. This reality adds significantly to traffic congestion and long commutes, increasingMarin’s carbon footprint while taking away from family time and community connectedness.

We spoke to Nicole Cruz, a long-time College of Marin employee, who commutes from San Pablo to Kentfield every day. Supporting affordable housing is one key action we can each take to continue our legacy of environmental protection in Marin.

Nicole’s connection to Marin and desire to live here intersects with her personal commitment to reducing her carbon footprint. We all lose when people like Nicole are unable to participatefully in our community because of the high cost of housing. We can preserve Marin’s open space while also taking wise steps to meet the community need for housing.

Together we can build a sustainable future by supporting affordable housing for everyone in Marin.

In solidarity,
