Lighting up the lives of parents & children

Volunteer Spotlight: Juan Morellos-Rico
Posted on Category Volunteer SpotlightTagged

We couldn’t do our work without dedicated, hardworking volunteers like Juan Morellos-Rico. He lights up our lives and warms the hearts of the children and families we serve.

Born in Mexico, when Juan moved his small family to Marin, he jumped right in volunteering at several different nonprofits in the county. He joined our agency about 10 years ago, helping at Old Gallinas Children’s Center when his oldest son enrolled. Now, Juan’s five-year-old grand-daughter is also part of our child care services family. Juan helps with gardening and cleaning when needed and is now making a vital contribution to our lunch distribution efforts.

“Families are closer and more appreciative since the pandemic,” Juan notices. “What makes me happy is seeing smiles on the children’s faces. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help our families!

Juan is deeply appreciated by many members of our team:

"There are no words that can express the appreciation I have for Juan. I first met Juan at an Old Gallinas Parent Advisory Committee meeting. I remember him passionately explaining the impact that parent volunteers, most specifically fathers and grandfathers make on a program. Describing Juan as a volunteer does not accurately describe his role, Juan is Community Action Marin family. The incredible food distribution work we are doing providing bagged meals to go, and large 20lb food boxes to families would not be possible with out him. Juan leads with his heart and has often been brought to tears by the impact of the moment; whether that is something as simple as handing packages of bagels and cream cheese to a mom with the delighted squeals of the children in the backseat saying “we got bagels!” or lifting multiple heavy boxes of food into the truck of someone’s car that will be delivered to a family that is quarantined with COVID. Thank you, Juan. We couldn’t do this work without you."
