The Challenge

As of February 2012,  over 112,902 people are waiting for organ transplant  in the United States.  If you are in need of a kidney transplant you are particularly at risk.  Due to a severe organ shortage, thousands will endure grueling dialysis with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 35%;  at 10 years, only 10.5% have survived.

The failure to meet this demand has sparked a paradigm shift, from reliance on deceased donor organs to actively embarking on living donor transplant searches. Innovations such as paired donations and Web assisted altruistic living donation are allowing more people to live with better outcomes.

The Goal

We envision a future in which people facing health challenges and medical professionals become partners in health. and more people will receive the gift of life of an organ transplant.

History

In 2008, in response to a nationwide gap in vital information for adults with kidney challenges, cofounders Shar Carlyle, a volunteer and kidney transplant recipient, along with philanthropist Jerome Strom, paired up to launch Strom Kidney Education Fund. In 2010, to better reflect our mission the program was renamed and became Kidney Community Education, "The KCE Program." The KCE program was created to help those caught between the challenge of a life-threatening health condition and constructive solutions.
