Head Start at 50

We began our year celebrating the fact that 2015 will mark the 50th anniversary since the inception of Head Start. Head Start was created in 1965 as part of Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty” to give children in poverty a head start in health, wellbeing and their education. In celebration we wanted to reflect on our own Head Start roots in Marin County.

September is always a time of new beginnings at Community Action Marin as the  Head Start and Child Development Centers fill up with new children and the preschoolers start kindergarten.  In some classrooms we are hiring new teachers while in others the staff who have been dealing with a full house all summer due to school age children being there can start to think about maybe taking a vacation of their own, but not until the new school year gets underway.

The Future of the Childcare Initiative

IN 2010 Community Action Marin joined forces with the Marin Child Care Council, First 5 Marin, MarinKids, the Marin Child Care Commission, Parent Voices and the Youth Leadership Institute to begin to formally work together to bring about a dedicated local funding stream for children’s services. This was an idea that many groups had been talking about for years. In the ensuing years this group grew to include over 75 different agencies and individuals with representatives from the public and private sectors including community based organizations, the educational community, local business leaders and local government.

Cal Fresh Increased Income Limits Expands Eligibility

Head Start Opens New "Hamilton 3" Classroom

We are excited to announce the opening of a new classroom at our Hamilton site, what will be called  Hamilton 3. We recognized a need for more services in Novato as our children age out of Early Head Start and have created a unique classroom. This will be the first time our agency has established a classroom specific to just enrolling three year old children. This opportunity has come to us as part of the federal government’s restoration of funding for Head Start after sequestration took a hit to our program the prior year.

Gail Theller Retires from Community Action Marin

 Gail K. Theller has retired from her directorship of Community Action Marin.  Gail was an employee of the Agency for 47 years, and acted as Executive Director for 36 years.  Her leadership, commitment and energy will be missed, but she has passed the reins to a supremely competent replacement, former Deputy Director Laurel Hill.

 

CAM Executive Director Gail Theller Honored with MLK Legacy Award

At the Marin Martin Luther King celebration this year, Gail Theller was the recipient of the Community Legacy Award, one of four MLK Community Awards. Gail Theller, Executive Director of Community Action Marin, has devoted the majority of her adult life in service to Marin County and this nomination is to recognize her service of over 40 years to the Marin City community and to so many of the communitybased organizations down through the years.

Marin Head Start Collaborates with College of Marin Nursing Program

For many years, the College of Marin has been the site of an innovative collaboration that has supported the need for dental check-ups for the many students enrolled in our Head Start preschool classrooms and our home based programs.

Energy Assistance Available

CAM’s Energy Program has received funding for 2014. Beginning on February 4th, we will be holding two workshops on Tuesday and two on Thursday. Check-in times are 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Workshops start promptly at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. Attendance will be limited to 15 persons per workshop.

Passing bowls family-style teaches kids to respond to hunger cues, fights obesity

When children and child care providers sit around a table together at mealtime, passing bowls and serving themselves, children learn to recognize when they are full better than they do when food is pre-plated for them. This was reported by a university study of feeding practices of two-to-five-year-old children in child-care centers.
