Venetia Valley Partners with Old Gallinas in Learning Walks

December 2, 2013

I received the email reprinted below from Juan Rodriguez, the principal of Venetia Valley Elementary School.  We have been creating a strong partnership with Mr. Rodriguez and his staff through the Prek-3 initiative funded by the Marin Community Foundation.   Venetia Valley staff came to Old Gallinas to do a “learning walk”, visiting three classrooms involved in a joint Spanish immersion program with the kindergarten classrooms at Venetia Valley.  We are very proud of the work the Old Gallinas staff is doing with the leadership of Site Supervisor Paula Cifuentes and Assistant Site Supervisor Leydis Mata.

Shall We Invest in Prisons or Preschools?

November 1, 2013

Congress is often compared to pre-K, which seems defamatory of small children. But the similarities also offer hope, because an initiative that should be on the top of the national agenda has less to do with the sequester than with the ABCs and Big Bird.

Executive Director's Message

November 1, 2013

There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a republican or democrat, but the President of the United States.

Epilogue

October 1, 2013

At a recent meeting I overheard part of a conversation that went something like this: “If I hear one more story about how a client recovered I’m just going to ….!”  Well, this is not one of those stories. This is about that other America some of us know exists, but fail to respond to.

Doctors of the Future?

August 1, 2013

First, have you ever thought who will be the doctors of the near future?  For your children or grandchildren?  A group of talented young people from around the nation converged at U.C. Berkeley for the 2013 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. The attached photo was taken on that day, July 12th when  I served as a speaker and presenter for the third year in a row to discuss transplant ethics, experience, and impact on our community.

Marin Head Start Community Partnerships

July 1, 2013

While Marin Head Start has classrooms that stay open through the summer, the general feeling in June (while looking forward to summer fun) is reflecting on the year that just flew by so quickly. In planning for next year, it is important for us to think not only of our successes, but also to consider our challenges as learning opportunities. Among the successes shared by our team were the community partnerships built over the course of the year or strengthened by our collaborative approach. We have found our local community is our greatest resource in helping to provide for the children and their families.

Executive Director's Message

Executive Director's Message

June 3, 2013

Facing the task of cutting 142 children from the Head Start program in Colorado Springs this fall, the teachers and administrators came up with a creative response: Have the children decorate empty chairs, then sell them for $500 apiece to stave off the worst of the across-the-board federal cuts heading their way.

Family Style Meals

February 1, 2013

Children readily place forks, spoons, plates, and cups onto several tables in the classroom as staff finish preparing and portioning out appropriate amounts of food for each table.  At the center of each table is a delicious array of foods - chicken in salsa verde, corn tortillas, carrots, persimmons, and milk. When everything is set, children and staff sit down together, serve themselves each item, and talk about what they are eating that day.
