Hearing and Vision Screening at Marin Head Start

November 1, 2012

The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential health or developmental problems in infants and young children who may need a health assessment, diagnostic assessment or educational evaluation. Screening in early childhood supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes positive child health and developmental outcomes. Early screening can prevent future problems.

In the shifting health care arena, staying on top of the burgeoning flow of information relevant to KCE clients is no small task. I am glad to report that this autumn has been a season of unparalleled learning.

Executive Director's Message

October 1, 2012

A couple of weeks ago, Gail Theller, Don Smith, Laurel Hill and myself attended a presentation by Dr. Robert Reich at the Congregational Church in Berkeley.  Dr. Reich was the Secretary of Labor under President Clinton, and now teaches at Cal Berkeley.  Dr. Reich is an economist, and appears to have a completely rational, history-based take on our current economic situation.

As many folks know, the Marin Community Foundation has funded a five year project aimed at closing the “achievement gap” here in Marin County. This grant is known as the “Promoting Early School Success for All” (PESSA) Initiative, or the “PreK- 3 Initiative.” A part of this work is done through the ECE Quality Improvement Project.

Interesting Workforce Trends

September 3, 2012

As a member of Marin’s Workforce Investment Board, I attended the Board’s Annual Retreat at the local Embassy Suites last week.  As usual, lots of facts and figures were presented, but some I thought were worth passing on since they must pertain to Marin’s own workforce, and that has a particular relevance for CAM as an employer, CAM employees and CAM clients.

KCE News--Teamwork, Convergence and Altruism

August 31, 2012

Since founding the KCE program in 2008 I have learned to measure progress in small steps. It is not every day that I can say that convergence, team work, and altruism gave a KCE Client a new healthy life.

Rememberances of Stacy Swor

July 2, 2012

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Stacy W. Swor, a member of the Community Action Marin Board of Directors for over 23 years.  Stacy served unselfishly, for several years as President of the Board, and his wise, measured and well-reasoned contributions to the Board and to our Agency cannot be overstated.  An obituary from the San Francisco Chronicle and remembrances from fellow Board Members and CAM staff are included in this Special Edition.

March 1, 2012

Family style dining is recommended in child care centers because it enriches learning.  Pouring, passing, serving and sharing food not only promotes language and fine motor development, it enhances a child’s self-esteem by providing opportunities to make decisions and take responsibility.

KCE Goes to Washington

March 1, 2012

March is a landmark month for the CAM/KCE program!  On March 2nd, my kidney donor, Sally Kennerson, and I will be celebrating our “lucky 7” year transplant anniversary. Sally and I could not be more different . She is a US Air Force veteran and the mother of three. I am a veteran of the Los Angeles film industry. But we share a lifelong bond.   Many thousands of others are not so lucky and may not live to see their transplant day.  What better way to recognize this than to go to Capitol Hill?
